Sandwich decoration

A sandwich is a brilliant invention of mankind. It would seem nothing special, but bread and butter are simply made for each other. A regular sandwich with butter is a well-balanced dish containing proteins, fats, carbohydrates and some important vitamins and microelements. Beautiful and tasty sandwiches can be prepared for almost any occasion: for breakfast, a quick and inexpensive snack during the day, as an accompaniment to the main course or as a chic main course.
Let's start with the sandwich classics - bread and butter. To beautifully decorate the simplest sandwich, use a special knife with a wavy blade. With its help, you can easily and quickly make nice curls from soft butter. Put them on a piece of bread or toast made of black or whole grain bread, complete the picture with a sprig of greenery, a pinch of paprika, pink or black pepper - and an elegant sandwich is ready.
By the way, you don't have to stick to the old rule and make sandwiches with butter. You can find ricotta, mascarpone or other cream cheese in any supermarket. These neutral cheeses, as well as low-fat cottage cheese, can be used as a base for complex sandwiches and mixed with herbs, hot or sweet sauces.
Sandwiches with caviar and fish are a classic of Russian-style feasts. They are very tasty and beautiful if you treat them with respect and come up with a decent design. For example, cut out neat triangles, circles or stars from bread, shade red caviar with herbs or olives, and black caviar with a slice of lemon or cucumber. Instead of butter, again, you can use ricotta, mascarpone or mozzarella. You don’t need to mix red and black caviar on one sandwich, it’s better to make many different sandwiches – this way the festive table will look richer.
If there is little caviar or fish, and many guests, make this delicacy not the main ingredient, but a decoration for sandwiches. Prepare sandwiches with fresh vegetables and greens and decorate them with a small amount of red or black caviar, shrimp, neat pieces of fish, rolled into roses. Do not worry, against such a background the taste of delicacies will be even brighter.
You can make festive sandwiches from caviar and red fish without any bread at all. Use slices of cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, avocados, and thick lettuce leaves as a base.
If you are lucky enough to find a beautiful herring, do not rush to cook herring under a fur coat. The pearly backs of this fish look great in sandwiches. Combine them with thinly sliced cucumber, red onion, dill, green onion feathers, cream cheese and put on black bread - an ideal snack. You can do the same with anchovy fillets.
Sprats and other canned fish deserve special mention. To tell the truth, these are not the most attractive products for sandwich decoration, but if you want, you can make them beautiful. Sandwiches with sprats can be supplemented with miniature young greens - arugula leaves, watercress, young parsley or even wheat sprouts. Canned tuna, pink salmon, saury should not be put on a sandwich in pieces, it is better to mash them with a fork and use as a filling for vegetable sandwiches.
Treat pate in sandwiches in the same way – the delicate, tasty pate mass needs additions in the form of fresh herbs, vegetables, olives, capers or sour berries. A pate sandwich can be decorated in an original way with pomegranate sauce, thick plum jam or orange zest.
An original breakfast sandwich can be made from bread and eggs. Cut a heart in a piece of bread (it’s easy to do this with a cookie cutter), pour an egg in and fry. And if you add cheese, bacon, herbs and finish the sandwiches in the oven, you’ll get a very filling breakfast. Want something prettier? Here you go – sprinkle the fried egg with lavender flowers and pink pepper and put it on a sandwich with cheese, mushrooms and salad.
Large sandwiches that act as a full-fledged meal can also be beautifully decorated. Use the same techniques as in salads: leave the most beautiful ingredients for decoration. For example, large lettuce leaves, meat, cheese, eggs, mushrooms and sausage in a sandwich can be decorated with elegant onion rings, cherry tomatoes, young radishes and purple basil. To prepare large sandwiches, use classic salad recipes - you can't go wrong. For example, a caprese sandwich consists of tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and olive oil. Prepare a sandwich based on a Greek salad from tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet onions and feta. Caesar salad can also be turned into a sandwich, you just need a little boiled chicken, cheese, eggs and lettuce leaves. Eggplant and walnuts will make a wonderful sandwich in the style of Georgian cuisine. Even a simple beetroot-mayonnaise salad or squash caviar can play a major role in decorating a sandwich if you approach the matter creatively.
A real find for meat lovers is bacon, jamon, prosciutto and other types of meat delicacies. They are usually sold cut into thin strips, which are convenient for making sandwich decorations. Just fold a strip of bacon in a zigzag pattern, place something tasty and beautiful on it: olives, sun-dried tomatoes, dried cranberries, fresh figs, crumble blue cheese - and an unusual sandwich is ready.
In France and Italy, sandwiches with thick paste-sauces are often prepared: tapenade from olives and capers and pesto from basil and nuts. In Russia, they are almost unknown, and in vain - these sauces are very tasty, filling and beautiful. Prepare sandwiches from baguette, bruschetta or ciabatta, thickly spread with pesto and tapenade for the nearest holiday, and you will see - they will be eaten first.
Finally, a little something sweet. We are used to the fact that a sweet sandwich for tea is bread with jam and honey. However, there are many more options for dessert sandwiches, and many of them are very unusual. What do you say, for example, about a sandwich with cream cheese, fresh strawberries, basil and a drop of balsamic vinegar? It looks great and tastes very interesting.
Nectarine with feta, thyme and honey, pear with walnuts and Camembert cheese, fresh figs with ricotta and honey, plums or cherries with thick balsamic vinegar, baked pumpkin and goat cheese, melon and ham – these are classic options for decorating sweet sandwiches in European cuisine.
Good taste and a wide selection of fresh, beautiful products - that's all you need to decorate sandwiches. Don't be afraid of the new and don't forget about the proven classics, and the sandwiches on your table will not only be tasty, but also beautiful.
